If you are thinking about applying for an allotment, please consider the following:-

If you have not had an allotment before, then it is difficult to know just how much time and commitment it takes to keep an allotment.  Below is a short note indicating how much time you will need to allocate in your week if you are going to work your allotment successfully.

  • You will need to allocate at least two hours twice per week.  Most people put in considerably more time.
  • Putting in a whole Sunday every three weeks does not work.  Weeds grow prolifically and need to be dealt with at least once a week in the growing season and crops need constant attention.  Runner beans need picking every few days and courgettes become marrows in a week.
  • An immaculate, well planted plot does not stay that way for long, it needs constant attention to keep it that way.
  • It does not matter how inexperienced you are at growing, there are some very good books available and plenty of free advice from some very experienced allotmenteers who are only too pleased to help out.  Allotments are friendly and helpful places, so please also factor in some nattering time.
