How the Council Operates

The Town Council has 15 Town Councillors elected for a term of four years. The last Town Council elections were in May 2007. The councillors are split into 4 wards, Amersham Common Ward (3 Councillors), Amersham on the Hill Ward (5 Councillors), Amersham Town Ward (5 Councillors), and Weedon Hill Ward (2 Councillors).

The Civic Year runs from May to April with the election of the Mayor and his/her Deputy taking place at the Annual Statutory Meeting in May. These roles are filled by councillors who have been nominated and voted for by their councillor colleagues. The Town Councillors are unpaid, and do not receive any attendance allowance or payments for their duties, which they undertake on a purely voluntary basis. The Mayor receives a small allowance to cover the expenses of this public office.

The Town Council meets approximately 6 times a year and has 3 main committees and 5 sub committees. These committees make decisions under their remitted powers or make recommendations for ratification by full Council.
